Through collective action ACS NRTCC will tackle disparities in cervical cancer prevention, screening, and treatment in order to eliminate cervical cancer and reduce the harms caused by the disease.
Cervical cancer is preventable, yet too many are still dying. While death rates have dropped since the 1970s due to screening and prevention, progress has stalled. Black and Native American women and people with a cervix face significantly higher death rates that are about 65% higher than White women. Alarmingly, half of those diagnosed have never been screened, highlighting the need to expand access and reduce health disparities.
The ultimate vision of the ACS NRTCC is a world without cervical cancer. To ensure the ACS NRTCC can have the greatest impact in response to nationally identified needs, we’ve prioritized 5 areas of focus intended to guide roundtable members and partners in in eliminating cervical cancer and reducing its harms. Advancing health equity to address cancer disparities is a core component to the work that we do to ensure that no one is disadvantaged in their fight against cervical cancer.
Every person should have a fair and just opportunity to prevent, find, treat, and survive cervical cancer. Therefore, we commit to centering health equity in all that we do. We agree to work toward fairness and justice by systematically assessing disparities in opportunities, outcomes, and representation, and redressing [those] disparities through focused actions.
We collaborate with partner organizations, offering various tools, resources, learning opportunities, and discussion platforms needed to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to prevent, detect, treat, and survive cancer.
Cervical cancer can often be found early, and sometimes even prevented, by having regular screening tests. If detected early, cervical cancer is one of the most successfully treatable cancers. Whether you or a loved one are worried about developing cervical cancer, have just been diagnosed, are going through treatment, or are trying to stay well after treatment, this information can help you find the answers you need.
